Brain tumours include all tumours inside the human skull or in the central spinal canal. They are created by an abnormal and uncontrolled cell division usually in the brain itself but also in lymphatic tissue in blood vessels, cranial nerves, brain envelopes, skull, pituitary gland, or pineal gland. Brain tumours may also spread from cancers primarily located in other organs.
Any brain tumour is inherently serious and life threatening because of its invasive and infiltrative character in the limited space of the intracranial cavity. However brain tumours are not invariably fatal, especially lymphomas which are benign or non-cancerous.
There are very few hospitals in India who have the best solutions for brain tumour treatment without post surgery complications.
Some of the best hospitals for brain tumour surgery in India are Fortis Hospital where Dr Rana Patir and at Max Hospital, Dr Arun Saroha are great neurosurgeons. Dr VS Mehta at Paras Hospital is also one of the best brain surgeon in India. Other good hospitals for Brain Surgery are Max Hospital, Apollo Hospital, Nanavati Hospital, Aarvy Hospital and Artemis Health Institute.
Early Signs of Brain Tumour are :
Headaches which are not caused by High BP or Vision
Vomitting
Sudden Blackout
The cause of primary brain tumours is unknown.
CT Scan of the Brain is the best test to determine the presence of a Brain Tumour. Sometimes a contrast CT Scan of the Brain is required to correctly diagnose a Brain Tumour. MRI of the Brain is even a better modality but is not available at all places.
The best treatment for Brain Tumour is to remove the tumour through surgery and then send the tissue for Histopathological examination to find out whether the tumour is benign or malignant.
If the tumour is benign then nothing needs to be done except keep an eye for any recurrence. However if the tumour is malignant then followup treatment in the form of chemotherapy may be required. In some cases the surgery may not be possible due to the difficulty in accessing the tumour then Gamma Knife or Cyber Knife is used to destroy the tumour through radiation.
The cost of Brain Tumour surgery in India ranges from USD 4500 - 6000 at the best of the hospitals. The cost of Gamma Knife or Cyber Knife is in the range of USD 5000-7000. Sometimes both surgery and Gamma Knife is required to safely remove the brain tumour. Before planning the treatment latest MRI scan will have to be done alongwith some blood tests. The cost of these investigations are in the range of USD 300-500. The hospital stay for brain tumour surgery would be 5-7 days and post discharge stay in India would be about 2 weeks. So you should ideally plan a trip for about 3-4 weeks to India for getting the complete treatment. You can send your reports by email or whatsapp to get an estimate about the cost of the treatment before arriving in India.
Apart from the treatment the other costs like travelling, hotels and food are all cheaper in India. The boarding and lodging cost for the patient and one attendant in a decent airconditioned guest house would be around USD 40-60 per day. Those who have to stay for long periods can even rent an apartment for around 300-400 USD per month. The stay in cancer cases is longer where the patient needs multi modality treatment.
