Cervix is an organ in the females which connects the lower part of the uterus to the vagina. Various strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing most cervical cancers. These days a vaccine is available for HPV which prevents cervix cancer. Regular screening for Pap Smear also helps in early detection of this cancer in women.

The best test for early detection of the Cervix Cancer is Liquid Based Pap Smear where the gynaecologist scrapes fluid from the vaginal canal and tests it in the laboratory to detect cancer cells at an early stage. Advanced tests include Colposcopy, Punch Biopsy and Endocervical Curettage. If cervical cancer is established then further tests are done to find the stage of the cancer. The best test for this is Whole Body PET Scan whch finds tumour cells in any other part of the body.
Surgery - Surgical removal of the tumour inside the cervix or complete removal of the cervix and the uterus is considered the best treatment. For a very small cervical cancer, it might be possible to remove the cancer entirely with a cone biopsy. This procedure involves cutting away a cone-shaped piece of cervical tissue, but leaving the rest of the cervix intact. Most early-stage cervical cancers are treated with a radical hysterectomy operation, which involves removing the cervix, uterus, part of the vagina and nearby lymph nodes. A hysterectomy can cure early-stage cervical cancer and prevent recurrence. But removing the uterus makes it impossible to become pregnant.
Radiation and Chemotherapy are sometimes used in conjunction with the surgery or even separately.
The cost of Cervix Cancer Treatment in India through surgery ranges from USD 4000 - 6000 at the best of the hospitals. The first step is to correctly diagnose the stage of cervix cancer. The cost of investigations would be approximately USD 800-1200. Once we know the stage of the cancer then the treatment is planned. If surgery is chosen as the first line of treatment then we have the option of doing Cone Biopsy, Cervix Removal Surgery or Radical Hystrectomy. The maximum hospital stay in case of radical hystrectomy surgery would be 5-6 days while the stay is lesser when the surgery is done for lesser tissue removal. The patient has to stay in India for 2-3 weeks for this kind of surgery.
